No run support, no problem. That has been the mantra this week for the Cardinals' starting pitchers, who have improved on their already gaudy numbers during a stretch of offensive weakness that continued in a 2-1 win over the Padres at Busch Stadium on Saturday.
Outfielder Tommy Pham, summoned from Triple-A on Friday as part of the Cardinals' quest for offense, slid into the top spot of the order, where he doubled and scored the tying run in the sixth and then came home as the winning run in the Cardinals' 2-1 final-at-bat win over the Padres on Saturday.
The Padres will try to put the finishing touches on a successful start to their 10-game road trip, while the Major League-best Cardinals aim to forge a series split when the two teams close out a four-game series at Busch Stadium on Sunday.
The Cardinals' offense didn't exactly break out on Saturday, but it did enough to snap a season-long four-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Padres in front of a sellout crowd at Busch Stadium.
